This season at the Asolo is in full-swing with an abundance of options for the avid theater-goer. Here is what they have in store for you in the coming months:
The Crucible wraps up on March 10, so if you have not caught this Arthur Miller classic on the Salem Witch Trials, your time is running out, just like that of the many accused women in 1692 Salem...
A Doll's House Part 2 runs through the end of March. This play, which picks up where A Doll's House left off, with an 1880s housewife slamming the door on her husband and children, imagines her life 15 years into the future as an independent woman and writer. You do not need to be familiar with Part 1 to enjoy this sequel.
Next up this season is Sweat. This 2017 Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play is a commentary on working class life in the early 2000s. When layoffs begin, friends find themselves pitted against each other in the hard fight to stay afloat in a turning economy. Sweat is open now and runs through April 6.
Following the drama is raucous comedy Noises Off. With opening night just hours away, a motley company of actors stumbles through a frantic, final rehearsal, and things could not be going worse. According to the Wall St. Journal, "If laughter is the best medicine, this play is capable of curing double pneumonia." Noises Off runs from March 20 to April 20.
Heartfelt comedy The Cake is up next, a play by writer/producer of critically-acclaimed and hugely popular TV show This Is Us, Bekah Brunstetter. An NYC couple returning home to North Carolina for their wedding is met with a collision of faith, family, and frosting in this play, which runs April 3 to April 28.
Closing out the season is dark musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. A murderous barber bent on revenge turns out to be the secret ingredient to success for a failing meat pie shop in this twisted but thrilling Sondheim theatrical treat. Sweeney Todd runs from May 1 to June 1.
With the growth and development in downtown's Rosemary District, the area has populated with cool shoppes, services, and restaurants to support its growing popluation. One of my new favorites is Rosemary & Thyme, an off-shoot of The Rosemary.
The familiar Rosemary has recently shifted its focus to breakfast & lunch, opening Rosemary & Thyme as its dinner location. The two sister restaurants share the charming garden terrace for outdoor dining.
My recent visit to Rosemary & Thyme was fabulous. We experienced bucolic evening breezes, great service, and sampled many menu items, all of which were wonderful. The wine selection was great. If you pay a visit, try the scallops with risotto, sea bass, or osso bucco.
Wine Walk to Ca’ D’Zan
The annual Wine Walk is on March 29 this year at The Ringling. Stroll to the Ca' d'Zan through the Ringling's World Fair, sampling wine as you go. Each station will feature a unique theme with food and wine pairings, entertainment and activities. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to engage with wine makers and enjoy some of Sarasota's best culinarians!
