Day Trip: St. Pete's Dalí Museum
Whether it was to escape the Red Tide or just a change of scenery, a friend and I took a day trip to St. Petersburg to revisit the iconic Dalí Museum. The current exhibitions present the wide and very informative permanent collection, the largest outside of Spain, and a unique collaborative exhibit, Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí. Butcher lives and works in the Sarasota area and his work is exhibited not only in regional galleries but in significant museum collections nationally. The Dalí Museum commissioned Butcher to apply his unique eye and large format photography process to capture Dalí's coastal Spain that inspired so much of his work. The large scale and more intimate images in some cases are paired with specific paintings to aid the viewer in appreciating the inspiration for many of Dalí's other worldly shapes and relationships.

Three hours at the Dalí found my friend and I thirsty and hungry, so off we went to highly recommended Farm Table Cucina. This multi-level supermarket of delicacies and second-level restaurant with a rustic industrial feel highlighted farm-and-Gulf-to-table, Italian-inspired cuisine. Its location on 2nd Street is less than a mile from the Dalí, so ambitious museum-goers can walk to lunch or cocktails after!

One of my favorite restaurants, The Table Creekside, has closed to update and refresh its interior and fabulous menu! They will reopen in early October, with new menu items and cocktails. If you are craving great seafood in the meantime, might I suggest their neighbor & sister restaurant, Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar, for a more casual coastal dining experience, but the same quality of delicious food.
When we lost Aretha Franklin earlier this month to cancer, soul music lost one of its greatest. Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is proud to present a limited run, special edition show from Sept. 11 through 15 to honor the Queen of Soul. For tickets and information about this show, click here.
