New Favorite: Summer House on Siesta
149 Avenida Messina, Siesta Key
I leapt at the opportunity to try brand-new Summer House recently, a casual but sophisticated "transitional steakhouse with a seafood attitude," according their own words. The newest venture from the owners of fellow Siesta Key restaurants The Cottage, The Hub Baja Grill, and the Beach Club, Summer House is so beautifully designed and well executed--from the menu to the light fixtures--that it has quickly become a must-see (must-eat!) on Siesta.
My group of six settled into a comfortable and spacious banquette and ordered cocktails and wine from the large bar. The centerpiece of this grand space is the 14-ft long fishtank that sits in the middle of the dining room, which brings the ocean ambiance right to the forefront. The surrounding space is decorated in cool colors, with lots of glass, and a neat wall of wine bottles, which highlights their over 100-bottle selection.
The steakhouse with a seafood attitude does both with solid respectability, as one would expect from these experienced restauranteurs and their skilled team. I began my meal with a wedge salad, which was delicious with crispy bacon, bleu cheese, and a green goddess dressing instead of the traditional bleu cheese drizzle. Absolutely delicious was my main course, the diver scallops. (After a bit of research, I came to find that these are named as such because they are harvested right from the ocean floor by divers, consequently getting you a large and succulent hand-picked scallop.) These were served upon lobster risotto that was simply divine. The side dishes were served family style, so we all shared. Thus, I was able to try both the creamed spinach, which was without doubt, the best creamed spinach I've ever had, and the bourbon bacon brussels, which were crispy and flavorful.
Worthy of a Visit
The steak and seafood specialty shines through the entire menu, but not a thing came to the table that was not meticulously prepared and delectable. The creative cocktail menu and humongous wine selection will please many a beach goer at the end of a long day in the sun.
This shining new star on the Siesta Key restaurant horizon I would recommend to any of my friends if they are looking for a truly standout meal with a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. Summer House is located on Avenida Messina right in the middle of Siesta Key Village and is open for dinner only.
